Technician checking refrigerant pressures with gauges on a heat pump

Heat pumps

Heat pump maintenance, twice a year, before the weather turns

A heat pump works both seasons, so it needs a check before each one. We tune up all brands so small problems don't become July or January breakdowns.

A heat pump doesn't usually fail all at once. It loses a little efficiency, works a little harder for the same result, and wears a little faster. You don't notice until the bills climb or it quits during the first hard freeze.

Because a heat pump heats and cools, it runs more months of the year than a furnace or an air conditioner alone. That's why we recommend two maintenance visits a year, one before summer and one before winter. RCI has done this for 27 years, on every brand, for homes and businesses across the OKC metro.

What a maintenance visit covers

This is a performance check, not a glance at the thermostat. On a typical visit we:

  • Run the system in both heating and cooling modes when the weather allows
  • Check airflow and the condition of the filter
  • Look at cycle behavior and how performance has trended
  • Inspect key components for early wear
  • Confirm the thermostat reads accurately and the system responds
  • Flag efficiency loss before it turns into a repair bill

Why twice a year

Summer and winter each stress a different side of the system. A pre-summer check makes sure the cooling side is ready for weeks of high heat. A pre-winter check makes sure heating holds up through a cold snap.

Commercial buildings may need a different schedule based on size, occupancy, hours, and how complex the equipment is. We'll set one that matches how the building actually runs.

Filters, airflow, and ductwork

Restricted airflow makes a heat pump feel underpowered, drives up energy use, and wears out parts. The filter is the cheapest thing standing between you and that. Homes with pets, allergies, more people, or heavy year-round use need filters changed more often than the package says. We'll tell you what interval fits your house.

Leaking, undersized, or poorly balanced ducts cause hot and cold zones, lower efficiency, and longer run times. We run our own sheet metal shop, so if the ducts are the limit we can fix them instead of just noting it. Duct improvements plus regular maintenance is often what finally fixes the room that never got comfortable.

Comfort problems maintenance can fix

Maintenance isn't only about preventing breakdowns. A small adjustment during a tune-up often clears up the everyday annoyances:

  • Rooms that never heat or cool evenly
  • Run times that seem too long
  • Performance that shifts when the seasons change
  • Short cycling that keeps temperatures swinging
  • Energy costs rising with no change in habits

Planning ahead

Regular visits also tell you where the system stands. If repairs are getting frequent or performance keeps sliding, you'll hear about it early enough to plan a replacement on your schedule instead of during an outage. No pressure either way.

How often should a heat pump be serviced?+

Twice a year for most homes: once before summer and once before winter. Commercial systems may need a schedule based on building size, occupancy, and operating hours.

How often should I change the filter?+

It depends on the house. Pets, allergies, more occupants, or heavy year-round use all mean more frequent changes. We'll recommend an interval during your visit.

Does maintenance really prevent breakdowns?+

Most emergency calls started as a small change months earlier: a little less airflow, a slightly longer cycle. Catching those early is the whole point. It also keeps efficiency up and extends the life of the equipment.

Do you maintain commercial heat pumps?+

Yes. We service offices, restaurants, schools, and commercial buildings, and we schedule around your operating hours.

Need heat, cool, or a straight answer?

Call, or send a note and we'll get right back to you. Same-day service in most cases.
